MUMBAI: India’s first original Netflix series Sacred Games opened a new gate for original Indian content on Netflix, as the series was a huge success and was widely excepted by one and all.
As many as 11 films have been announced by the online streaming site, out of which one Hollywood movie set in the country has been acquired for the SAARC region. The films include those produced by Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Madhuri Dixit Nene and Anushka Sharma. Also, names including that of Rishi Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Mithila Palkar, Manav Kaul, Neena Gupta, Aparshakti Khurrana and Usha Jadhav are attached with the projects.
Here are the 11 original projects that will be streamed by India for the online streaming site:
1] Fireband: This movie will be produced by Priyanka Chopra’s production house Purple Pebble Pictures. Fireband is a Marathi film, the story will revolve around a successful lawyer, a sexual assault victim (played by Usha Jadhav) and how she tackles difficult family cases, while also dealing with intimacy issues in her own marriage.
2] Soni: Directed by Ivan Avr, the story of Soni revolves around a young policeman. Premiered at Venice Film Festiva, the story revolves around Soni and her superintendent, Kalpana, who take the onus to change the growing crisis of violence against women. However, she is transferred out for alleged misconduct on duty.
3] 15th August: The movie will be produced by ace Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit and it will be a Marathi movie, set in a Mumbai chawl.
4] Music Teacher: The movie starring Manav Kaul, Divya Dutta, Amrita Bagchi and Neena Gupta is of an unsuccessful musician whose life takes an unexpected turn when his protégé, a Bollywood sensation, returns to the town for a gig.
5] Chopsticks: The movie will star Abhay Deol and Mitakia Palkar. The movie is about an under confident but talented girl who seeks out a con to help recover her stolen car from a gangster.
6] Bulbul: The movie will be produced by ace Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma’s Sharma’s Clean Slate Films. Bulbul will be a period series set in a modern atmosphere amidst age old beliefs and superstitions.
7] Hotel Mumbai: Hotel Mumbai will be released as a Netflix original in 2019. The film, about the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Anthony Marras, the film stars an ensemble international cast of Dev Patel, Armie Hammer and Jason Isaacs.
8] Bard of Blood: This movie will be produced under the production house of Red Chillies which is owned by Shah Rukh Khan and is scheduled for a 2019 release.
9] Rajma Chawal: This movie will mark the debut of Rishi Kapoor on Netflix. The movie will be a light-hearted story about a family in the age of social media. Rajma Chawal will be available on Netflix from 30 November 2018.
10] The Rise of Sivagami: A spin off to SS Rajamouli’s film Baahubali, The Rise of Sivagami is in progress. “We’re excited that Baahubali will find a global audience just like the films did. I think the series gives us the freedom to explore the origins of Sivagami,” said Netflix VP of production, Todd Yellin. Season one of the Netflix series will comprise nine episodes based on Anand Neelakantan’s book The Rise of Sivagami, which tells the story of Mahishmati’s queen Sivagami and how the city-state evolved into an empire.
